Re-writing existing songs, filk and otherwise, is a long-standing tradition in the Filk community. So much so that "to filk" is used as a verb to mean that process of re-writing. These re-written songs are usually referred to as "parodies", but while some of them are true parodies, others are simply re-writes of known songs, utilizing the community aspect, the folk aspect, of the genre to bring derived and added value.

Some people have come to the conclusion that filk is all parody songs, but of course that is incorrect.
